Which trilogy is better: Lord of the Rings or Star Wars?
We're sorry, but this discussion has just been closed to further replies.
Both of these trilogies are incredibly entertaining. However, the second 3 Star Wars films (Episodes 1-3) sucked. There's just no way getting around it. Now, The Hobbit (directed by Guillermo Del Toro, not Peter Jackson) is coming out and I'm wondering if it will bring down the LOTR trilogy. I think that Star Wars is a better trilogy than LOTR but if the Hobbit proves to be good, LOTR might be a better series/franchise. What do you think?
It's tough to decide, really, when you figure that both trilogies are pretty much based off the same books. There is no way to get around the more than evident "similarities" between Star Wars 4-6 and LOTR. Still, I'm going to throw my support to Star Wars; those movies have impacted my life more that LOTR. Plus, while LOTR stands alone as one of the best fantasy series ever, George Lucsas, because of his love for the old Hollywood spectacles, incorporated enough elements of different genres to make Star Wars a good fantasy, sci-fi, western, and melodrama trilogy. Furthermore, LOTR was destined to be a hit. It has an amazing cast of players and a budget that pretty much bought New Zealand. Since Star Wars blew the budget on special effects, they had to get almost no-name actors. Something has to be said for a film that has inferior ingredients but ends up being equally as amazing. Yes, Star Wars is a better trilogy.
Well, I'd have to say that the original theatrical releases of Star Wars 4-6 are better than the LOTR original theatrical releases. It gets a little muddied for me when you consider the extended cuts of the LOTR films, and the crap Lucas did to episodes 4-6 in subsequent cuts. The fact that what Peter Jackson wanted to put out was even better than what was commercially viable as far as feature runtime, and George Lucas has done nothing but crapify his original three films whenever a new technology allows him makes me think that maybe the only thing Star Wars has going for it is history and the good fortune that Lucas didn't have the budget or technical capabilities to ruin the first three films at their initial release.
