Nice list, although I would have rated Welles a bit higher than 10th. You really got old school for this one!

Yeah I thought about that, but he's more recognized as an actor than a director. Of course, he made one of the best films ever with Citizen Kane.

You forgot quite a few (Felini, Pazolini, Korasawa, Truffaut, Bergman to name a few) and I disagree with most of the list, but hey, who could squeeze in all that good stuff....

I know. I tried to fit in as many as possible. Bergman and Truffant were really close to making it, but it had to be Welles and Altman.

Excellent list, except I think Stanley belongs at the top. He directed (arguably) seminal films in several genres: science fiction with 2001, comedy with Strangelove, horror with Shining, war with Full Metal Jacket, and his others weren't too bad either. Not to take anything away from Alfred, but come on!

I hear you. Kubrick is personally my favorite director but you cannot deny Hitchcock. I mean The Master of Suspense has to be number 1 - Rear Window, Psycho, North by Northwest, Vertigo - all absolute classics.

This list is pathetic. The top 10 dead filmmakers are all white English speaking men? Come on now. This list is so silly it's pathetic. Please go watch some Fellini, Kurosawa, Ozu to name a few and try putting together a new list.

8 1/2 is a great movie but I think he's a better writer than a director.

Elizan Kazan's blacklisting is a travesty that leaves me wondering even to this day what he could've done if not for HUAC.

Incidently, I just did a Top 10 Modern (Living) Directors and their films at my site: http://fauxnixon.com/top-10-modern-directors/

OR should that be killed by traffic a backup with Coral at:
